iPhone, Microsoft mobile, Android, Nokia, and RIM: the 4 players of device platform

There are four major mobile device or smartphone platforms that are competing in the market today. But which platform is superior over the other in tems of speed in browsing, network security, application and tools versatility, and GUI stability. Which among the 4 –iPhone, Microsoft mobile, Android, or Rim will win the long term battle? The battle exists between concepts, ideas and companies. They go beyond the platforms which also include Linux open source, LIMO and Symbian now fully owned by Nokia.

APPLE
Apple is growing more rapidly since the beginning, and has tapped the highly desirable portion in market share. Apple manages to outmarket much larger companies like Hewett Packard, and has beaten Microsoft in commercials. Apple is well ahead with accessories, and even has the majority of car manufacturers making their phones and iPods into cars. But Apple has its drawbacks, its telephone lines tend to be limited to both depth and breadth. It’s got limited color and size. Apple has the tendency to cover up problems, and its kill-switch capability on the iPhone is used to kill applications it believes represents some threat to their control.

Google
Google is definitely unmatched on the Web with revenue stream almost legendary. It is known to be the one of the best places to work in, more popular of getting top caliber employees to leave their respective companies to work for Google. It has shown willingness to allow applications on its devices that may compete with its own offerings. Like Apple, Google has its own kill-switch but is used to assure to the phone work and maintain the quality of the experience. Google works with multiple carriers and hardware providers to develop vast number of telephone lines, giving the consumers a wide spectrum of choices. One setback for Google is that their platform, Android, is still new to phones and is still far from the most attractive OS. It has shown little real revenue success outside of their search engine business to date. The company lacks marketing competence, and appears to struggle with how to sell the phones properly. It is one of the newest players to the phone market and more likely to make critical errors before becoming part of the mainstream.

Microsoft

Microsoft is the most powerful company in software business which has occupied the vast region in ecosystem of enterprises. It’s got large number of manufacturers and carries that supports its phones, and is one of the most veteran, in terms of segment experience, and providers of smartphones. Microsoft products connect seamlessly to their entrenched back end offering like Windows, Windows Server, and Exchange. Their phones have been considered as the most practical and affordable. Microsoft appears to be ahead of the game in terms of security and centralized phone management. They have massive financial resources which could probably allow them to buy one of the other companies. On the other hand. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform which was supposed to outmarket against Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platforms, is delayed and the current platform has aged badly. Microsoft lacks Application store despite the number of developers they have working on applications for their platforms. Microsoft appeats to be the least aggressive of all the players in phone market and unable to bring the full force of their resources onto the problem.

RIM

RIM’s blackberry is known to have developed very loyal user bases tied to its phones. Blackberry is often called the crackberry because of how addicting the device is. Moreover, RIM has significantly shrugged off Apple because of its most easy-to-use phone products in the market. Its broad line of phones includes devices with and without keyboards and candy bar sized phones. Like Microsoft, RIM aggressively works on security and its device generally comes in with easy blessing of IT executives who have been hooked up to their own devices. RIM’s Blackberry is boasted for its longest battery life and appears to be the most industrial grade phones.

RIM however has the least resources among all other players and may have the risk of being acquired by larger players given the current economic situation. RIM requires an expensive redundant server that IT departments are not always at all satisfied and happy about. It hasn’t played the biggest hit with the consumers. It is way behind in terms of application stores and has been relatively slow in dealing with back end services to assure user experience. RIM also has the tendency to put users at risk in legal disputes and may damage customer loyalty a lo in the end.
